Finance Committee holds briefings on economy, charter schools, hospitals | News, Sports, Jobs

The House Finance Committee will hold its first briefings of the year today through Friday, and the State Departments will discuss their budget proposals.

The first briefing will be held today from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. with an economic outlook for the state provided by state economist Eugene Tian of the state’s Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism and Carl Bonham, executive director of the University of Hawaii Economic Research Institute.

The Department of Budget and Treasury will also provide information on the governor’s financial plan.

Another briefing will be held Thursday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. with the State Department of Education on charter schools, followed by the State Department of Health on Hawaii Health Systems Corporation and hospitals across the state, including the Maui Health System, starting at 1:30 p.m hours until completion.

On Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., the Department of Defense will address physical disasters, veteran services, the Hawaii National Guard Youth Challenge Academy, the Hawaii Army and Air National Guard, and the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency.

Briefings will be livestreamed on the Hawaii House of Representatives YouTube channel.

The committee is chaired by Kyle Yamashita, representative of Maui. Oahu Rep. Lisa Kitagawa is the vice chair.
