Dawn of a new day for Africa: building a modern digital economy

Africa is undergoing a remarkable transformation, rebuilding the foundations of its economy with a new value-added digital infrastructure.

The World Bank is coordinating a Digital Economy Initiative for Africa, which aims to ensure that every individual, company and government in Africa is digitally equipped by 2030.

These efforts are evidently paying off. Africa’s digital economy and technology ecosystem is experiencing exponential growth. A report by non-profit organization Endeavor predicts that the market size of Africa’s digital economy could reach $712 billion by 2050, spurred by the country’s young population, increasing smartphone use and increasing internet penetration.

Africa’s digital economy, already valued at US$115 billion, is still in its infancy with only 33% of the population using the internet. However, analysis of Endeavor shows rapid growth. Africa’s GDP is growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4%, compared to 1.7% for Europe and Latin America. At the same time, the population is becoming significantly wealthier, with consumer spending increasing by 9.4% per year.

African developers are creating more open source repositories on the software engineering marketplace Github than any other continent in the world, and investment in African startups is growing twice as fast as other global markets.

Another statistic illustrates the magnitude of the change: According to the United Nations, Africa is the fastest urbanizing continent in the world, projected to urbanize 60% by 2050.

This statistic underscores the huge need for infrastructure needed to accelerate economic growth.

Africa has the natural advantage of being largely unequipped with expensive outdated IT systems. Rather, it has a “greenfield” IT landscape that is open to embracing the latest technological advances and directly embracing innovations such as mobile payments, green energy and global e-commerce.

Africa will shift from being a passive participant working for others to an active leader to create more value and share a larger share of the benefits of the digital revolution.

The technology and people enabling Africa’s transformation

At Huawei, we strongly support the digitalization of Africa. We have a comprehensive strategy to help the continent unlock its digital potential, with three major work programs:

New infrastructure: Huawei is building a comprehensive, fast and reliable network with a future-oriented cloud platform that has immense computing power and is based on sustainable energy.

New model: Huawei is committed to the digital development and prosperity of every industry, and encourages and supports ecosystem partners to innovate and create businesses on digital platforms. This initiative will drive economic growth and job creation in Africa.

New talent and ecosystem: Huawei’s approach to building a sustainable and digitally literate workforce on the continent includes education, equipping students with the latest technologies, upskilling programs for young people, and supporting Africa’s emerging digital startups.

A bright sky: Powering rural Cameroon with solar energy

Africa is rapidly benefiting from the transformation of digital infrastructure. Talaat Moustafa Group (TMG) Holding, the region’s largest municipal real estate developer and a key proponent of smart cities, has deployed one of the most advanced Internet infrastructures in the world with Huawei’s Fiber To The Office (FTTO) solution.

Huawei has provided the community with highly reliable devices and simplified operation and management, enabling intelligent functions such as lighting, irrigation systems, and waste management.

Meanwhile, rural Cameroon had adopted Huawei’s microgrid solar solution, successfully bringing sustainable energy to the region where traditional electrification was slow.

This initiative has brought light and reliable electricity to more than 40,000 homes in over 350 townships, pushing the boundaries of inclusivity and environmental sustainability.

These tangible changes demonstrate the transformative potential of new infrastructures and models, making Huawei’s vision a reality.

Strengthening African economies through innovation

Huawei’s vision isn’t just limited to providing infrastructure; Our main focus is to help African companies transform their business processes to take advantage of the latest efficient technologies.

An example of this is Huawei’s support of Algerian oilfield production: we helped Sonatrach, an Algerian oil company, implement a digital transformation that solved problems with inefficient old IT systems, resource silos and information blockages.

Huawei provided our cloud stack (HCS) and innovative service platforms combined with big data services.

Huawei’s partnership with Ivory Coast has also greatly enhanced education through the deployment of our All-Scenario Intelligent Campus Solution, which has increased access to quality education and given every child a window on the world.

Huawei’s digital vision for Africa

Huawei fosters a thriving digital ecosystem that serves Africa’s unique needs. For example, our mobile money system has been deployed in more than 20 countries, including Ethiopia and Congo-Kinshasa. This has democratized access to digital financial services and included more than 400 million users in emerging markets in the digital economy. This single system accounts for about 30% of registered mobile payment accounts in emerging markets.

Ethiopia Telecom has also become a fully-fledged digital service provider by implementing a national cloud platform for digital transformation. Over 34 million people are on the platform, enabling them to participate in an economy where technology and innovation are at the core.

Big things grow from small things: investing in education

Huawei recognizes that people are just as important as technology in building a vibrant digital economy.

We believe that the future of the continent lies in its younger generation. That’s why we offer programs designed to equip young people with the digital skills they need to excel and thrive in a digital global economy.

In addition, Huawei provides comprehensive support for digital startups in Africa, including political, technical, and financial support, with the aim of creating an enabling environment for these startups to innovate, grow, and contribute to the continent’s digital transformation .

Overall, Huawei is committed to fostering a digital talent pool and a thriving technology ecosystem in Africa, which we believe will help build a strong digital future for the continent.

The future of digital Africa is clear and extremely promising. Huawei stands ready to provide our technology and resources to support this transition. Huawei will always persevere and open to cooperation, and strive for excellence to help the African continent create more value and share more benefits to win in the coming decades.
