Why Ant and Dec and other celebrities are wearing medals at King Charles’ coronation

Celebrities, heads of state and representatives of foreign governments were among the invited guests to the coronation of King Charles III. in London on Saturday. Guests from 203 countries around the world were an eclectic mix, including Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelenska, Vice President of China Han Zheng and Lionel Richie, and Saturday night TV legends Ant and Dec.

Everyone was dressed in their finery and some, including Ant and Dec, wore medals. The wearing of medals is common among military personnel on royal occasions, but celebrities are not always expected to be adorned with metal on their chests. In the case of Ant and Dec, the large gold crosses emblazoned on their chests are the OBE. The Geordie duo were made OBEs at Buckingham Palace by King Charles in 2017 when he was still Prince of Wales.

Other contestants who wore medals included actress Dame Emma Thompson. She wore her medal awarded as DBE. Here you can see more about the medals awarded for various honors.
