“We celebrities are human too,” Eniola Badmus cries out

By Nehru Odeh

Popular Nollywood actress Eniola Badmus has taken to social media to lament the way celebrities are being bullied online, stating that they too are human and can have blood running in their veins.

Badmus made this statement on Wednesday, August 3, 2013 on her Facebook page, while also expressing her dissatisfaction with the way defamatory statements are being made against her on social media without any facts or evidence.

“I would like to address an issue that troubles social media platforms and online communities: defamatory statements about me.

“How do you wake up, go on social media and put people down by making false/negative comments about them and still expect mercy from God? This is someone you don’t even know! Together!

“You don’t have a single fact/evidence but will be behind your phones making a slick video defaming my personality. Why?” Badmus complained.

The actress also bemoaned the way she was body-shamed when she was plus-size, adding that the body-shaming continues even now since she’s on her fitness journey and made her political decision.

Asserting that celebrities are people too and can have blood running in their veins, Badmus wondered why people should judge them on their personal and humane accomplishments when “no one is judging your choices or outlook on life in your corner.”

“When I was plus size that was the height of body shaming, now on my fitness journey the same negative comments, when I made my political decision, the same negative comments. Folks, let people live their lives and respect them for it. Some of us have muscles to last. How about those who can’t and are silently struggling with depression and low self-esteem?

“We celebrities are human beings, blood runs in our veins like yours. Nobody judges your choice or attitude towards life in your corner. So why should you judge me by personal and human actions?

“Most of the time I ignore these comments or even bother to read them, but sometimes it hits hard and you really, really want to set an example.

“I recognize that defamation is a serious matter and can have serious consequences, both legally and socially. It’s important to recognize the effect of our words on others and the responsibility that comes with speaking our minds publicly.

“Although freedom of expression is a fundamental right, I think it should be exercised responsibly and with due regard for the potential harm it can cause. Above all, let’s spread love I love you guys,” she claimed.
