Since today is Veterans Day, it is important that we honor the men and women who have served in the military. Originating in 1919, this event pays homage to the Americans who sacrificed their lives to defend and fight for the country. Nearly 30 years later, President Truman issued an order desegregating the nation’s armed forces, calling for equal treatment of all people regardless of race, color, religion or national origin.
Although the military was integrated in 1948, African Americans have participated in every war fought by or within the United States. Of the many blacks who served, several worked in the arts and entertainment industries. Notable figures like Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte and Sheryl Underwood were part of the US military at some point in their lives before rising to superstardom.
As we celebrate Veterans Day, we’re taking a look at some of the Black celebrities who have served in the armed forces.
