LONDON (Reuters) – Gambling advertisements in Britain will be banned from using a celebrity who has a strong attraction to those under the age of 18, an official committee said on Tuesday in a bid to protect children in one of the world’s biggest gambling markets.
“Marketing communications/advertising for lotteries must … not be likely to have a strong appeal to children or young people, particularly by reflecting or being associated with youth culture,” said the Advertising Practices Committee, which writes advertising codes that are then governed by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).
The committee added that ads must not feature people or characters whose example is likely to be followed by those under the age of 18.
