Brad Pitt was barred from entering China for almost 20 years in 1997 for a film in which he played the leading role. The film’s plot, which is based on a historical event from the mid-20th century, prompted the Chinese government to punish the famous actor.
“Seven Years in Tibet” was published in 1997. Directed by John Jacquesthe film tells the story of Heinrich Hareran Austrian mountaineer who left his family in 1939 for an expedition to the Himalayas.
Banned because of the conspiracy
When World War II broke out, Heinrich and his companions were captured by British troops. Years later, in 1944, he managed to escape and reached the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region, Lhasa, where he met and became friends with a young man Dalai Lama. The two became friends before the Chinese People’s Liberation Army invaded in 1950.
“For an audience it’s two hours, but for me it’s half a year of life” Pitt to Interview Magazine.
“And this one in particular. Being in a different culture for so long, you couldn’t help but walk away with something.”
Pitt only entered China in 2014
Because of the negative portrayal of the country and the military, the film was banned throughout China by Beijing’s censorship authorities. For this reason, Pitt was unable to enter China from 1997 to 2014 when he accompanied him Angelina Jolie to Shanghai to promote their film Maleficent.
