Tendy is, as you may have guessed, a cheeky nickname for a vine. When it comes to hair, tendrils are the face-framing parts on either side of your head – they average chin height, but can also be shorter or longer. Wearing vines is a timeless way to add a touch of elegance to any look. The hair trend has become even more popular as many people have curtain bangs and layers that lend themselves to drooping tendrils. Stars like Hailey Bieber, Gigi Hadid, Dua Lipa, Ashley Graham and Lori Harvey are at the forefront of the trend.
The trendy trend
Tendrils often come in pairs and perfectly frame the face, but lately we are seeing some tendrils appear singly. “The fine hair trend involves stripping one piece of hair to the side of your face-framing layers instead of leaving two out,” says Raven Hurtado, professional hairstylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago. She describes this as a statement look that is also very elegant.
Celebrity hairstylist and co-founder of The Beachwaver Co. Sarah Potempa believes the tread hairstyle is trending because it’s reminiscent of “early 2000s-style looks, many of which have recently made a comeback.” Additionally, “this style is an easy way to add interest and movement to a look by framing the face asymmetrically.”
Styling a trendy
To achieve the sleek look, Hurtado recommends putting your hair up in the style you want and then cutting off a section of it. Then use a styling cream or serum to shape the hairline to your liking. My face instead of hiding it. “The great thing about the Tendy trend is that it works on all hair types and textures because it can truly be tailored to each individual person.”
You can choose your own adventure when styling the vine. “You can do a thin, thick, straight or wavy line to highlight your look,” says Potempa. She recommends using a product like the Coast Pro Flat Iron ($105). It’s great for styling tendrils that frame the face, as the floating plates allow you to manipulate the hair not only straight, but also wavy or curly.”
