Celebrities are reportedly removing likes from Johnny Depp’s Instagram statement, which was released after he won his highly publicized libel case against Amber Heard in June.
Depp initiated the lawsuit against Heard, his ex-wife, claiming she defamed him after writing a 2018 op-ed piece in The Washington Post about the backlash women receive after speaking out about sexual violence.
Sentiment on social media has undoubtedly been skewed in Depp’s favour, but the tide could turn in light of the release of newly unsealed court documents last week that appear to have given even Depp’s most staunch supporters pause.
The documents reportedly reveal that Depp claimed Heard never actually harmed him, possible evidence that some of the photos Depp’s team submitted to the court had been edited, suggestions that Depp was attempting to use nude photos of Heard as evidence to submit, and disturbing text exchanges between them Depp and Marilyn Manson.

Johnny Depp’s trial made him so popular that he reportedly amassed nearly 7 million new followers on Instagram in the last year. Decontextualized moments from the trial were memorably distributed across TikTok, giving way to a barrage of clips that mocked and ridiculed Heard, particularly during particularly emotional moments of testimony; while Depp tended to be adored and adored.
A few weeks after the trial concluded, Heard spoke about her portrayal on social media in an interview. “Even someone who’s sure I deserve all this hate and sharpness, even if you think I’m lying, you still can’t look me in the eye and tell me you think it’s on the social.” Media has given fair representation,” Heard said. “You can’t tell me you think that’s fair.”
She added that she doesn’t blame the jury for siding with Depp. “I don’t blame them,” she explained. “I actually understand. He’s a popular character and people feel like they know him. He’s a fantastic actor.”
