The Best Dressed Celebrities At The 2023 CFDA Awards: Mary J. Blige, June Ambrose, And More

The 2023 CFDA Awards, held last night at the Museum of Natural History in New York City, spotlighted the best American talent offering innovative designs, accessories and more. Among the celebrated winners, which included Serena Williams, who won the Icon Award, was Diotima’s Rachel Scott. Scott was named American Emerging Designer of the Year – her attention to detail and whimsical take on knitwear didn’t go unnoticed. Williams wore a custom Thom Browne gown to the ceremony. The evening began with celebrity red carpet appearances wearing contemporary designers from Christopher John Rogers to Diotima.

Some celebs opted for pieces that didn’t look over the top, while others gave it their all. For many, the theme of the evening felt like it translated into relaxed territory. Mary J. Blige, known for her stunning red carpet looks, dazzled in a sparkling black sheer gown by Christian Siriano. Her dress was decorated with hundreds of tiny crystals. June Ambrose, a fashion titan, wore one of our favorite numbers of the evening, a spectacular Bibhu Mohapatra gown. Ayo Edebiri appeared in a floor-length Loewe silk dress that fit the actress perfectly.

One particular look that stood out was Teyana Taylor wearing a shiny outfit by Christopher John Rogers. The pieces consisted of a collared top with rainbow-colored buttons and a skirt with a dramatic train. Elsewhere, Ayesha Curry made a statement in a maroon hand-crocheted Diotima dress with intricate detailing – Aurora James stunned in a similar design in black. Jordyn Woods tried out a baby pink Azeeza dress — and she nailed it.

The evening’s emcee was Anne Hathway (wearing Ralph Lauren). The winners also included the Womenswear Designer of the Year award, which went to Catherine Holstein (Khaite). As previously reported, Mary J. Blige presented a hip-hop tribute to the prodigiously talented director Hype Williams, sponsored by New Era. Edebiri and Prabal Gurung presented the American Accessories Designer of the Year award, which went to The Row. Willy Chavaria was named American menswear designer of the year. And Jonathan Anderson was honored with the International Designer of the Year award for his work at JW Anderson and Loewe

There were bold looks on this momentous evening – nominees who we think are still making an impact include Coach’s Brandon Blackwood and Stuart Vevers. Both were nominated for the American Accessories Designer of the Year award.
