Swindon celebrities back calls to keep facilities at Oasis

However, Swindon Borough Council has stated that the future of the site is not sustainable while the hall is still attached and that potential operators who would take over operations of the site, which closed in 2020, do not want it.

This means the building that gave legendary rock band Oasis its name is set to be demolished once construction finally begins.

Responding to public plans for the protest on Twitter, comedian Ivo Graham, originally from Aldbourne, just outside Swindon, voiced his support

He said: “A vital cause for Swindon which I very much hope will be successful.”

A spokesman for Save Oasis Swindon replied: “You are a legend Ivo, thank you for your kind words.”

In addition to Ivo Graham, Chris Kamara also supported the cause and fondly remembered some of his visits to the sports hall and the music venue.

“Great memories of this place, especially the football training for the unemployed. Some brilliant characters who couldn’t find work at the time.”

“I saw some great bands there too – my favorites back then were UB40 & The Specials. And this is where my two sons went to the swimming pool for the first time.”

Ivo and Kammy are not the first big names to comment on the popular leisure centre, although the latter has backed previous campaigns for the building.

When the Swindon Advertiser launched a campaign to reopen the Oasis shortly after its closure, Doctor Who actress and singer Billie Piper got involved.

Ms Piper told the newspaper: “It is such an important part of the Swindon community, giving people of all ages a place to exercise, have fun and make their own memories.”

“The permanent loss of this iconic landmark would be heartbreaking for the community, as some of them rely on the space for their physical and mental health, but also for the loyal employees who will lose their jobs.”
