Channel 4’s Scared Of The Dark will see six celebrities live in total darkness for a week in this groundbreaking endurance experiment. Hosted by Danny Dyer, the show follows celebrities Scarlett Moffatt, former boxer Chris Eubank, ex-footballer Paul Gascoigne, Olympian Nicola Adams, Max George from The Wanted and Chloe Burrows from Love Island as they face intense challenges while they live in a specially created place. Black Reality Space for seven days.

Supervised by clinical psychiatrist Dr. Tharaka Gunarathne, the stars must navigate everyday life and socialize, as well as take part in quests that will test either their primal fear of the dark or their ability to function without light. It sounds terrible and soon we’ll see which of the celebs are tough enough to go the distance.

Danny Dyer says, “This is possibly one of the most bizarre things I’ve ever done in my career, and I’ve done a lot of crazy things. Throw in a bunch of celebs and let them do things without turning off the lights — this is Really Good TV. You’ll laugh, you’ll laugh more and I promise you’ll love it.”

Fear of the dark – how it works

Scared Of The Dark follows six celebrities who live in The Bunker, a purpose-built room that shields light. It’s also equipped with 50 infrared cameras so viewers can see what’s happening.

For five consecutive nights, the show follows celebrities as they grapple with life in the dark. To exit the bunker, celebrities simply have to shout “I’m afraid of the dark” and are escorted into the light.

To prove themselves, each of the celebrities takes on a series of challenges aimed at testing either their primal fear of total darkness or their ability to function in pitch blackness. Those who fail their challenges must take on Herculean tasks to save their place on the show. Every celebrity needs to be genuinely motivated to overcome their fears, because in the end only one will emerge from the darkness as a serial winner.

Fear of Dark Host Danny Dyer

Dany Dyer hosts the six-part Scared Of The Dark experiment. The Football Factory star played the lovable Mick Carter in it EastEnders from 2013 to 2022. He has also starred in Human Traffic, Severance, Skins and Plebs. He hosted the game show The Wall and fronted the Netflix series Cheat. He read the Alternative Christmas Message in 2018 and filmed the show Danny Dyer’s Right Royal Family about his famous lineage.

Meet the celebrities taking part in Scared Of The Dark

Nicholas Adams
Nicola was a boxing champion and a two-time Olympic gold medalist. She has also been on Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up to Cancer, Celebrity Gogglebox and The Wheel and competed on Strictly in 2020. The film Lioness: The Nicola Adams Story was made about her.

Paul Gascoign
Gazza was a hugely talented English soccer star at the World Cup and the subject of the film Gascoigne, which chronicled both his career and his struggles off the pitch.

Scarlett Moffatt
Scarlett rose to fame on Gogglebox. She has since won I’m A Celebrity… and hosted the spin-off Extra Camp, as well as Love Bites, Scarlett’s Driving School and Street Mate. She was also a regular on Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway.

Clinical psychiatrist Dr. Tharaka Gunarathne monitors the mental health of Scared Of The Dark celebs. He says: “One of the biggest challenges for celebrities is dealing with the unknown; their psychological sense of insecurity is at an all-time high. When you can’t see anything, your brain fills in the blanks, often imagining the worst. When you turn off the lights, your ability to keep yourself safe is suddenly threatened, and that’s what makes this particularly scary
