Russell Crowe and his girlfriend Britney Theriot learned the hard way that Melbourne restaurant Mr. Miyagi won’t change its dress code for anyone.
The couple stopped for a meal at the Asian fusion restaurant after playing tennis while still wearing their training gear. The restaurant, which has a “smart casual” dress code, quickly dismissed the pair.
“He went there wearing a brand new Ralph Lauren polo shirt, having just played a game of tennis, and was turned away,” Crowes manager Grant Vandenberg said in a statement to Daily Mail Australia.
Crowe and Theriot’s outfits were clearly out of date and Miyagi-san’s management team defended the decision. They argue that celebrities aren’t exempt from their dress codes, not even Oscar winner Russell Crowe.
“We treat everyone equally. It doesn’t matter who you are or if you are Russell Crowe. We have a dress code that we enforce at all levels,” Mr. Miyagi owner Kristian Klein told The Herald Sun last Friday.
“We’re not trying to teach people how to dress. But I personally know that if I’m in my thongs and my boardies, I won’t try to go to a nice restaurant because I wouldn’t be dressed appropriately.”

To avoid bad blood with the actor and his girlfriend, the Australian restaurant quickly poked fun at their strict dress code. They posted on social media, paying tribute to the incident with humor.
The restaurant’s Instagram posted a photo of a sign that reads, “Dress smart casual unless you’re Russell Crowe, then wear whatever.”

In response to Miyagi-san’s Instagram post, fans debated whether celebrities should be allowed to dine in restaurants despite not following the dress code.
“Celebrities shouldn’t be given preferential treatment!!! They are treated to perks and comps wherever they go because it’s good publicity for the establishment!! The rules should apply to everyone! 👏🏻👏🏻,” one fan commented on the actions of the restaurant staff.
“Seriously? I’ve seen people in far more upscale restaurants wearing thongs, shorts and t-shirts 🙄,” explained another fan, who disagreed with Miyagi-san’s decision.
