People who are obsessed with celebrities may be less intelligent than others, a study claims.
Research by Hungarian scientists has found that people who are obsessed with Hollywood gossip and A-list celebs are typically not smart. The study was published in BMC Psychology in late 2021 and concluded that “there is a direct association between celebrity worship and poorer performance on cognitive tests,” measuring both literacy and numeracy skills. The study is titled “Star Worship and Cognitive Ability Revisited: Applying Cattell’s Two-Factor Theory of Intelligence to a Cross-Sectional Study.”
In 1963, psychologist Raymond B. Cattell argued that fluid intelligence and crystallized intelligence were two categories of general intelligence.
For the study, 1,763 Hungarian adults completed a 30-word vocabulary test and a numeral symbol substitution test before completing a Celebrity Attitude Scale questionnaire to determine their interest in celebrities, the New York Post reported.
Respondents were asked to answer “yes” or “no” to a series of statements on the Celebrity Attitudes Scale, including: “I often feel compelled to learn the personal habits of my favorite celebrity” and “I obsess over details of my favorite stars”. the life of a celebrity.”
The study found that high scores on the Celebrity Attitude Scale correlated with lower performance on the two cognitive ability tests. The participants also provided information on their income, assets and level of education.
“These results suggest that there is a direct association between celebrity worship and poorer performance on cognitive tests that cannot be explained by demographic and socioeconomic factors,” the study said.

However, the study was not entirely conclusive. The researchers couldn’t determine whether celebrity obsessives scored poorly on cognitive tests because they used their intelligence to think about celebrities, or if they were fixated on Hollywood gossip because they were already less intelligent.
“Future studies should seek further support for our suggestion that the cognitive effort expended to maintain absorption in a favorite star may impair the individual’s performance on tasks that require attention and other cognitive skills,” the researchers said an interview with PsyPost.
The researchers continued, “Although our research does not prove that developing a strong obsession with one’s favorite celebrity leads to lower scores on cognitive tests, it does suggest that it may be advisable to carefully monitor feelings about it.” [them].”
