Messi scored two goals in the game and eventually won the only trophy he eluded in his remarkable career. Mbappé, who scored the same as Pelé in 1958 in the 2018 title fight as a teenager, became only the second player in history to score a hat-trick in the World Cup final.
Both Messi and Mbappé also scored on penalties.
Messi ended up winning the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player and Mbappé won the Golden Boot as the top scorer with eight goals in seven games.
