World AIDS Day, observed on December 1, is an international day dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection.
Thousands of people die each year from HIV/AIDS, which remains a frightening reality. It is estimated that Pakistan has around 20,000 new HIV infections each year, although worldwide new HIV infections, particularly among children, and AIDS-related deaths are declining.
On this World AIDS Day, many Pakistani celebrities have taken it upon themselves to educate as many as possible about the universal threat of HIV by joining the campaign #Aaobaatkarein.
Adnan Siddiqui, Ayesha Omar, Ahsan Khan, Ushna Shah and many other stars used their Instagram handles to draw attention to the diseases. “Is AIDS k aalmi din par #AoBaatKarein aur Pakistan mein bharti HIV ki bemaari ki rokthaam mein apna qirdar ada karein.”
The National AIDS Control Program estimates that 60,000 people in Sindh are infected with HIV and estimates that there are 9,500 AIDS cases. Only Punjab, Pakistan’s most extensive and populous province, has a higher number of HIV and AIDS cases.
