ELight celebrities, including Lindsay Lohan, Jake Paul, Ne-Yo, Lil Yachty, Soulja Boy, Austin Mahone, Akon and Kendra Lust were accused by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for violating securities laws while promoting cryptocurrencies.
The charges are part of a broader investigation into Justin Sun, a crypto entrepreneur, and three of his companies: Tron Foundation Limited, BitTorrent Foundation Ltd. and Rainberry Inc.
All eight celebrities have been accused of illegally promoting TRX and/or BTT without disclosing that they were compensated and what their compensation was.
The SEC has accused Sun of instructing the celebrities not to disclose that they were paid to promote TRX and BTT on social media platforms. Sun is also accused of manipulating the market for these currencies through wash trading, which involves buying and selling a security at or near the same time to make it appear as actively traded without actually changing beneficial ownership.

SEC Chairman Gary Gensler stated that “this case again demonstrates the high level of risk investors face when crypto-asset securities are offered and sold without proper disclosure.” Gensler added that Sun and its companies have violated federal securities laws designed to protect against the conduct of Sun and others, regardless of the labels they use.
A Lohan representative said the actor was unaware of any disclosure requirements and has agreed to pay a fine to resolve the matter. It remains to be seen what the consequences will be for these celebrities and whether this will affect their careers or public perception.
