Joanne Peh says showbiz celebrities are different from internet celebrities

SINGAPORE: In an interview with Lianhe Zaobao newspaper, local artist Joanne Peh explained the difference between showbiz celebrities and internet celebrities, commonly known as “influencers”. She said that this difference caused problems for many young actors.

“I think artists will feel the pressure from influencers. I often tell young actors that we are not influencers and should not compare ourselves to them. Our online traffic will not be better than theirs,” admitted Joanne Peh.

Because of the nature of their work, showbiz influencers may not be active on social media for long periods of time — unlike influencers who need to post online constantly.

Joanne added: “Her (influencer) job is to create online content every day. It is grossly unfair to compare the traffic they receive to traffic from traffic actors.”

However, Joanne explained that there are actors who want to increase their online presence and act like influencers.

“They’re not looking to improve their acting skills, they’re looking to increase their numbers. How can they have time to read books, attend classes, watch others perform, and practice acting? “There’s no online traffic doing these things that improve your acting skills,” Joanne explained.

Joanne Peh mentioned some of the difficulties she faced as a showbiz celebrity. One of them was when she had her first child with actor Qi Yuwu and didn’t renew her contract with MediaCorp.

Joanne remarked, “It was actually quite scary and hard to predict what was going to happen next. I was afraid that after having a child I would be stereotyped in a way and my acting career would end as a result.”

She also admitted that being an artist is lonely as the portrayal of the characters depends on the actors themselves.

“No one can help you. If you can’t feel and understand your character, you simply can’t. The pressure is all yours,” she said.
