Jo Koy mocked the “soft” celebrities who reacted less positively to his Golden Globes monologue during his first stand-up appearance since the awards show bombing last weekend.
“Holy shit, right?” the comedian said after taking the stage at St. Louis' Stifel Theater on Friday night to a standing ovation, according to Variey. “That big hug you gave me is all I need, swear to God. Damn whirlwind, damn it.”
“A lot of marshmallows, man,” Koy added of the Golden Globes audience. “They’re delicious, but damn, they’re soft. I just come from a different time. I see the changes that are happening. I get it, but damn, can we fucking laugh at ourselves?”
“I feel like none of you moms have seen it, and I'm kind of happy,” he continued. “Oh my God. It feels good to live in this country. We can say whatever we want to say. Don't apologize for it at all. Be able to…speak your mind.”
Later in his appearance, Koy indirectly addressed his highly acclaimed performance as host of the Golden Globes. “You are allowed to fail! Fail as often as you can. Just make sure you get the f— support,” he said. “F— up. Risk. Take a risk. Without any risk, you will never know if something is possible. I'm back, mothers. Take that risk.”
Unsurprisingly, the audience at Friday's show was much more receptive to Koy's comedy than the Golden Globes audience. “Oh God, this is fun. I haven't laughed in four days. I'm so happy. You make me so happy,” Koy said to thunderous applause. “That was a fun show, guys. I needed her. This is therapy. Guys, I love you. Thank you.”
In an interview earlier this week, Koy defended his “Big Boobies” Barbie joke and his joke about Taylor Swift. “The things that are said are just like, man, I don't think you understand who I am as a person, you know what I mean?” he said. “Because if you've ever seen me, you'll see how much I praise and shine a light on women, from my ex-wife to my mother.”
“My whole goal is to try to change that kind of narrative and just the perception of being part of a divorced family. I'll tell a joke – what happened to society where we can't even joke with each other anymore?” he asked.
