When Ben Affleck is at an awards show, memes of him looking upset are sure to circulate online.
Affleck's wife Jennifer Lopez addressed criticism of his facial expressions on Sunday ahead of the Golden Globes, where his film “Air” was nominated for best comedy/musical. “Ben's fine – you don't have to worry about Ben,” she laughed to Entertainment Tonight when asked about memes of the “Air” star. “Let me just tell you, he’s good. He’s happy, he’s here, he’s nominated.”
Lopez added that her husband is “laid back” so she “doesn't understand what people are being pushed for.”
“They don’t notice my face,” she said of the attention Affleck receives on social media.
Photos of Affleck have gone viral over the years, with some calling the Oscar winner “Sad Affleck.”
The actor/filmmaker accompanied Lopez, a presenter at the Grammy Awards in February, to the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Somehow, Affleck's face attracted more attention than Lopez's stunning Gucci dress.
The (unconfirmed) consensus was that Affleck wasn't having fun on music's biggest night.
“No matter how bad your day is, I promise you that right now you're not feeling as bad as Ben Affleck at the Grammys,” one post on X reads.
Added another: “I'm sorry but that's a miserable man!”
In 2016, “Sad Affleck” became a meme after Affleck remained silent during an interview with “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” co-star Henry Cavill, a moment highlighted by the addition of “Sounds of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel became even more dramatic.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times published in January 2022, Affleck spoke about “real problems” in the early 2000s when “people were constantly writing vicious, horrible, hateful stuff about me.”
“I got to a point where (public perception) was so different from who I was that I just stopped reading and stopped caring,” he said. “But as my kids got older and started seeing the internet themselves, that was the hard part. Even the 'Sad Affleck' meme – I thought that was funny. I mean, there's no one who hasn't felt that way at a junket.” But then my kids see it and I think, “Oh, are they going to think that their dad is basically sad, or do they have to worry about me ? “That’s really hard.”
