Jennifer Aniston trolled for saying celebrities are ‘becoming famous for basically doing nothing’

Jennifer Aniston has faced backlash over her comments about celebrities “getting famous because they basically do nothing” and naming Paris Hilton and Monica Lewinsky.

During an appearance on Variety’s Actor on Actor, the 53-year-old Friends star spoke with Sebastian Stan about how “the internet has shaped a new culture of people becoming famous.”

Regarding the Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee Jones sex tape, Aniston spoke about internet culture at the time of the leak.

“That was right around the time that the internet was really shaping a new culture of people becoming famous,” she said. “The thing about people getting famous because they basically don’t do anything. I mean — Paris Hilton, Monica Lewinsky, all of them.”

Hilton’s sextape with her ex-boyfriend Rick Salomon was leaked on the internet in 2004, while a 1998 sex scandal involving former US President Bill Clinton and Lewinsky broke out.

“I always say I feel lucky that we got a little taste of the industry before it became what it is today, which is just different — more streaming services, more people,” Aniston said. “You are famous from TikTok. You are famous from YouTube. You are famous from Instagram.

“It’s almost like it dilutes our actor’s job.”

Soon after her comments, many people began criticizing the We’re The Millers star, claiming she was from “nepotism.”

“Paris Hilton, Jennifer Aniston herself is a nepotism babe, most celebrities were nepotism babies then and are nepotism babies now… please,” one person wrote on Twitter.

Another person added, “Jennifer Aniston says Paris Hilton is famous for nothing sounds jealousy to me.”

Katy Forrester of The Sun wrote: “I love Jennifer Aniston but she doesn’t work nearly as many hours as Paris Hilton – this woman books gigs 24/7!”

“When did Jennifer Aniston suddenly become the crème de la crème of acting?” another person asked.

The Independent has reached out to representatives from Hilton and Lewinsky for comment.
