A Japanese entertainment agency has warned its talents against discussions Palworld, out of consideration for his ties to The Pokemon Company. Palworld was released for early access on Steam and Xbox consoles on January 19th. Due to its viral success, Palworld even surpassed the latest Pokémon release Scarlet and Violet in terms of sales. Despite Palworld's overnight worldwide popularity, Japan still seems to have concerns about this game and its similarities to Pokémon.
Most of the online discussion surrounding Palworld revolved around how it was inspired by Pokémon. Some players have even accused Palworld of plagiarizing some of its creatures' designs, such as Palworld's Anubis being too similar to the Pokémon Lucario. Probably because of this fine line between inspiration and possible plagiarism, a Japanese agency has asked its talent not to talk about Palworld.

Palworld has garnered a lot of attention for its Pokémon lookalikes, and a data-mined sidekick shows its developers almost flew too close to the sun.
In a statement to Tokyo Sports, that agency asked its talent not to talk about Palworld out of consideration for future collaborations with Pokemon. This move was likely due to the popularity of Pokemon in the region, and the mention of Palworld by one of the agency's most famous talents could potentially negatively impact relations with The Pokemon Company. “We have told our talent not to mention Palworld on social media or in public,” the talent agency source said. “This was done out of respect for the Pokemon side as an agency. This decision was made with future collaborations, etc. in mind.”

The Pokemon Company released a statement about Palworld a few days after the early access release. Although Palworld wasn't directly mentioned in this statement, the mention of “another company's game released in January 2024” makes it quite likely that it was Palworld. The Pokemon Company stated that it has not granted permission for use of the Pokemon IP or its assets and that it will investigate possible copyright infringements. Nintendo is also aware of Palworld, but says it doesn't comment on “individual cases.”
Palworld remains a sensitive issue for select companies, particularly in its home region. While Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe previously stated that the developers were careful to avoid copyright infringement on other gaming franchises, including Pokemon, this hasn't stopped online discourse about Palworld's possible plagiarism.
Aside from the controversy that Palworld caused, the game was a huge success on the Xbox. According to Xbox, Palworld was the largest third-party launch game on the Game Pass service and had more than 7 million Xbox players as of January. Given Palworld's resounding success, Xbox announced that it would provide support to Palworld's developers, such as dedicated servers and optimization assistance.
