Reality TV is not for the faint of heart. This is especially true on competition shows, where you have to be likeable (lest you suffer the wrath of social media), have a good social game, and be equipped with all the physical and mental skills you need to win. For some reason, Jamie Lynn Spears, who is anything but America's sweetheart right now, has decided that unscripted television is her new career path – until it doesn't happen anymore.
Last year, this unfortunate Nepo baby was cast on three reality competition shows, but it only took a few weeks for him to come out or voluntarily leave. And this week she made the very predictable decision to quit her latest competition after being triggered by a piece of chocolate.
In one of the funniest yet most predictable news stories you've ever read, Jamie Lynn quit the British reality show I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here this week “for medical reasons.” In a statement to The Guardian, ITV called the former Zoey 101 star a “fantastic campmate who has won exams and bonds well with her celebrity colleagues.” Her final episode aired on Wednesday night, making her the second contestant to leave the program this season for health reasons.
To be clear, as far as we know, her health issues are emotional, as Jamie Lynn has spoken on the show about missing her family and children. (Online viewers have mocked her frequent crying during the series.) To be fair, this show, which sends a cast of C- and D-list celebrities into the Australian jungle for a Survivor-like competition, really seems hellish. But this complaint from Jamie Lynn is a little ironic considering she's been intentionally jumping from reality show to reality show this year. In the episode before her exit, she officially broke down after sharing a piece of chocolate with castmate Tony Bellew and being reminded of the outside world.
Jamie Lynn's recent exit from a reality competition is funny enough. But add to that their other failed attempts to compete on Special Forces: The World's Toughest Test and Dancing With The Stars this year, and you have one of the worst entries into reality we've seen in decades. On Special Forces (another hellish competition that I can't blame anyone for quitting), she made it to the third episode before deciding it was too much. And on Dancing With The Stars, all she had to do was tango and cha-cha-cha before America decided they were done watching her dance. She also received some pretty rough reviews from the judges.
While I will never harass a mother about receiving a check, Jamie Lynn's reality career cannot be separated from her rather obvious attempts to restore her image following her feud with her older sister Britney Spears. The “Toxic” singer accused her less famous sister of conspiring against her along with her other family members and doing nothing to help end her previous conservatorship. It didn't help that Jamie Lynn released his memoirs in the midst of this drama. In the book, she painted a sob story of her life but showed little sympathy for Britney's situation.
Two months later, she showed up in the Special Forces with the goal of achieving something for herself after living in her sister's shadow her entire life. (Britney was right to drag her on Instagram, considering the timing.) By the time DWTS came around, the Nickelodeon alum had apparently learned to keep her mouth shut about her sister. Instead, she took the opportunity to give back to the acting community during her strike. (We don't know whether SAG-AFTRA knew about this or received their paychecks.)
On I'm A Celebrity, she claimed she had learned not to speak publicly about her sister, before assuring her castmates that she had “never taken anything” from her. She also downplayed their feud, as if anything about their dynamic could be described as normal sister drama. She even said that Britney was probably watching her on the show. (I doubt it!)
Unfortunately, I don't think Jamie Lynn's reality endeavors will end here. Her role in the Zoey 101 movie earlier this year didn't exactly boost her acting career, according to IMDb. However, I'm sure she could secure a role in a Lifetime movie if she tried. I also just feel like she was put on this earth to take part in Celebrity Big Brother UK. However, if she somehow ends up on The Traitors, I'll have to protest.
