Jeffrey Kimathi has become a well-known figure in Kenya and the global fashion industry due to his successful clothing line Jamhuri Wear, which is worn by celebrities around the world.
In search of better career prospects and personal development, Kimathi decided to move to the United States in 1998. Initially living in Dallas, he took on various jobs to support himself financially while furthering his artistic ambitions. After spending three years in Dallas, Kimathi decided to move to Harlem in New York City in 2001, shortly after the devastating September 11th terrorist attack.
When Kimathi arrived in New York, she noticed the significant presence of the black community, but a noticeable lack of representation in the art industry. This realization made him determined to close this gap. Kimathi started his business and secured a job at Ecko Unlimited, a renowned fashion company in New York, before later joining MTV. Inspired by his roots, the fashion designer had a vision to create Jamhuri Wear, a brand that not only symbolizes the black community but also elevates it to a global platform.
From Harlem, he launched a clothing line centered around the image of Kenyan hero Dedan Kimathi. To stand out while appealing to the black population, he carefully chose the name “Jamhuri” and specifically chose designs that paid tribute to icons such as Nelson Mandela, various African flags and the Kenyan national anthem.
Jamhuri Wear has achieved phenomenal success by showcasing its clothing to global celebrities – including Jay Z, Jidena, K'naan, Lupita Nyong'o, Akon, Tom Morello and Damian Marley.
