For years, Diddy’s lavish White Party ruled. Here are some of its most unforgettable celebrity fashion moments.

When it comes to groundbreaking soirées, few can match Diddy’s lavish White Parties. For more than a decade, from 1998 to 2009, the annual Labor Day extravaganza was pop culture’s hottest event, with an unmatched guest list that delivered indelible fashion moments.

“I remember the first party he threw in the Hamptons,” Paris Hilton recalled to The Hollywood Reporter in 2008. “It was iconic and everyone was there.”

In the early hours of the morning, an invitation to the exclusive party cemented A-list status in entertainment, business, finance, fashion and technology. Recurring guests included the Kardashians, the Hilton sisters, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Al Sharpton and Martha Stewart.

It’s been 15 years since Diddy’s first White Party, which took place over Labor Day weekend on September 7, 1998.

The annual tradition began when Sean Combs (currently known as Diddy, but also known as Puffy, Puff Daddy, and P. Diddy over the years) decided to showcase his new Hamptons homestead by bringing over 200 gliteratti to a barbecue invited. That first festival was largely attended by old-timers and mostly white people, and the media was quick to dub the rapper a “modern-day Gatsby,” which he seemed to like in a 2001 interview with The Independent, in which he boasted, “I’m him.” Great Gatsby.”

To be honest, Diddy was a far cry from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Gatsby, who threw extravagant parties to impress his wealthy neighbors. In this case, it was the establishment that wanted a peek into Diddy’s world.

As the rap mogul said in a 2006 interview with Oprah, the intention of the first White Party was to integrate hip-hop into the strata of the mega-rich and to find an intersection of both worlds in the interest of unity.

“I wanted to take the image away from everyone and put us all on the same color and level,” he told Oprah of the first Labor Day party. “I had the craziest mix: some of my guys from Harlem; Leonardo DiCaprio after he just finished Titanic. I had Southern celebrities and relatives there. Here 200 people sat and just had a barbecue at home.

Mission accomplished, according to some culture watchers, who believe Diddy’s parties changed hip-hop and American culture forever.

Over the years, the White parties branched out from the Hamptons to Los Angeles and Saint-Tropez, and also included several iterations of July 4th. The events also served as a major fundraiser for various international charities.

The last official White Party took place in Los Angeles in 2009 and marked the end of an incredible era. Here’s a recap of some of the defining moments.
