In the glare of social media, celebrities are known to indulge in a particular form of theatrics – the display of their wealth. A lavish performance, not always based in truth, but often designed to mesmerize and mesmerize her devoted fans and followers.
We’ve all seen a celebrity share a screenshot of their Mpesa or bank balance on their social media platform in a moment of casual bravado.
The numbers are stunning, the zeros are enticing, and the comments section is brimming with awe, admiration, and envy.
However, the truth behind these glittering displays can be more obscure than meets the eye.
In a world where the perception of wealth is often as influential as wealth itself, it’s not uncommon for some celebrities to artificially inflate their Mpesa and bank balances.
A little digital manipulation here, a cleverly cropped screenshot there, and voilà – the illusion of balance that would make even a billionaire blush!

Here are some of your favorite stars who got caught in a lie.
Oga Obinna
Born Thomas Maghana, the former Kiss 100 host had an egg on his face after sharing an edited screenshot of his bank balance.
In a ‘tug of war’ between him and comedian Eric Omondi, who has the largest balance in his account, Obinna ‘mistakenly’ shared a screenshot of his account but failed to make good changes to his balance of over Sh51million.
Because the decimal was too conspicuous, Obinna became a laughing stock. Pinned against the wall, Obinna previously claimed he would have stayed humble and not shown how “rich he was” if Omondi hadn’t teased him.

The two got into an argument after Obinna claimed Omondi’s activism was sponsored by someone he didn’t name. In a quick reply, Omondi shared his money, over Sh13 million, saying he lives and sleeps on money and can buy a radio station and employ it.

Shakila
Last year, the celebrity cum influencer used her social media to flaunt her Mpesa balance after apparently receiving Sh237,000 from an unknown sender.

Before the size of the amount and according to the screenshot she shared, Shakilla had received 25,000 Sh from Olamide Babatunle.
Interestingly, Shakilla “forgot” to sharply change her Mpesa balance after receiving the Sh237,000 as her fans denounced her for faking their balance.
In the screenshot she shared, the “New M-PESA” balance was not edited properly. Apparently she missed the “a” in M-PESA and didn’t capitalize the article.

Eric OmondiMore
In his recent altercation with Trade CS Moses Kuria, Omondi shared a screenshot showing how he had refunded Sh126,000 the former spent on him on his first US tour.

The self-proclaimed comedy president shared the screenshot after the refund and said respect between the two must now be maintained.
However, Omondi’s edited M-PESA screenshot was missing a hyphen, sparking an online debate.
In addition, the message contained no space between the timestamp and the “new Mpesa balance details”.
