TTo celebrate National Autism Awareness Month, we’ve created a special gallery featuring celebrities from across the spectrum. Some of these notable figures have been vocal about their disabilities. While others have not publicly acknowledged it, their behaviors or family statements allude to it. The television and film industry has worked to be more inclusive, honoring people in the community and raising awareness of those suffering from complex brain disorders. While there is progress, there is still much to be done. Read more about National Autism Awareness Month and a gallery of the celebrity talent we’re celebrating today.

National Autism Awareness Month raises awareness of autism and Asperger’s Syndrome in April. Autism is a complex brain disorder that often inhibits a person’s ability to communicate, respond to the environment, and form relationships with others. There are certain quirks and differences that some people can exhibit, especially when it comes to social behavior. Many of these complexities may not be particularly obvious to certain individuals, such as the celebrities included in our dedicated gallery.

Some of the celebrities on our list include billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, director Tim Burton, and comedian Jerry Seinfeld. While most fans might not believe that these celebrities went through life with certain mental differences on the surface, they have proven that the spectrum can’t stop them from great achievement and extreme success.

The White House issued an official proclamation on World Autism Day. The statement provides insights into how the Austin community is appearing across the country and how many people have been affected. The proclamation also addresses how the Biden administration will raise awareness and support for the community.

The proclamation details:

There is no one way to be autistic—everyone with autism experiences it differently—but together, autistic people make industries, communities, and our nation stronger. Today we celebrate the achievements of neurodiverse people everywhere and advocate for the equal rights and dignity of all people living on the autism spectrum.

Here in the United States, more than 5.4 million adults are autistic and 1 in 44 children have been diagnosed with autism. However, this developmental disorder is still misunderstood. Autistic people continue to face barriers in finding jobs, health care, education and housing, and the immense contributions of people with autism are often overlooked. We owe it to our fellow Americans to address the differences they face and to support individuals with autism with tools that allow for clearer communication, increased productivity, and greater independence.

For this reason, my administration is funding cutting-edge research to enable earlier diagnoses of autism and to develop more resources to help neurodiverse people.

It’s nice to see other communities welcoming Autism Awareness Month and doing their due diligence to support and uplift throughout the month of April.
