Celebrity autographs have their own value. For one, it feels amazing to have something from someone you admire that can last forever. Second, it’s also profitable if you decide to sell a celebrity-signed copy of something, for example.
But not all celebrities like or want to sign autographs. Some even have a policy of never signing one. Here are a few famous people who never do: (Source Mental Floss magazine)
- William Shatner
The Star Trek actor never signs an autograph. “When I’m traveling with my family or waiting for a plane, and if I’m doing it for one person, a series of 50 forms at once,” he said. “To save time, the answer is no.”
- Bryan Cranston
The Breaking Bad actor said the influx of merchandise and autograph requests after Breaking Bad just wore him out. “I’m retiring after 18 years of signing everything for the fans,” he said.
- Steve Martin
The actor, who last starred in Only Murders in the Building, said he found a clever way to avoid signing his name without making people feel bad. He hands out business cards with the inscription: “This certifies that you have met me personally and found me warm, polite, intelligent and funny”.
- Ringo Starr
The ex-Beatle drummer said in 2008 he would never sign one because he’s uncomfortable with people benefiting from it. “All the autographs are on stuff I’ve made. Any of my paintings or anything I’m involved with and it goes to charity. It is not only sold for others.”
5. Billie Eilish
The singer said she quit in 2019 after overzealous fans made her uncomfortable. “It’s something I don’t do anymore because I used to do it, but I realized that whatever someone did sold whatever I signed, so I stopped doing that,” she said.
6. Joaquin Phoenix
The famous actor said that he doesn’t mind autographs but is averse to photographs. Phoenix once said that a woman once came up to him in a shop and asked him for a picture, and his reply was, “You know what? I don’t, but thanks for coming. We chatted a bit. It was fun. Then she went and bought her drainpipe socks and I bought my stupid little sweatpants and that was it.”
