Celebrities Caution Politicians Against Hate Speech, Intolerance – New Telegraph

Ahead of the 2023 general election, celebrities from various sectors of the country’s entertainment industry have called on politicians and their supporters to moderate their speeches, warning that hate speech could endanger national security and peaceful coexistence.

Under the auspices of Celebrities Unite for Peace (CUP), the entertainers vowed to sensitive stakeholders that they should avoid actions that could spark tribal divisions, religious intolerance, extremism and the like.

Andy Chukwu, the organizer of the CUP, told journalists in Abuja on Tuesday that members were committed to raising awareness among stakeholders about the need to be prudent, particularly when using social media.

“Due to the start of election campaigns under INEC guidelines, voters are obliged to pitch tents with different political parties and candidates.

“This usually leads to verbal warfare as backers are always willing to go the extra mile in the market and promote their candidates.

“Sometimes this leads to hate speech, the spread of fake news to discredit their opponents, with ensuing violence.

“After carefully examining the impact of these vices, we offered to act as intermediaries between citizens, political parties and candidates to educate them on the need to avoid hate speech, fake news and violence before, during and after elections .

“…even before the advent of the 2023 general election calendar, the social media space, regional platforms…were unnecessarily burdened with fake news, social incitement, tribal and religious sentiments. Aside from the bravery of our law enforcement officers, particularly the DSS, whose ability to gather and manage intelligence has ensured national stability, as most of these vices pose an obvious threat to our national unity and security in general,” Chukwu said.
