AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – For some artists, living in California or New York is key to building a career where the thought of fame is within reach. However, some may find it comforting to leave these states and live in a breathable area of Texas.
Musk announces Tesla engineering headquarters is leaving Texas to return to California
Stars like James Van Der Beek, Sandra Bullock and Kyle Chandler have chosen to live in Texas as the pace and landscape of Texas has changed, which could be a necessary addition to their or their families’ lives.
Take a look at some of the famous faces who have decided to buy homes or real estate in Texas:
Sandra Bullock
The Oscar winner owns a number of properties in Austin, including the Walton’s Fancy and Staple deli. In an interview with Austin American-Statesman on YouTube, Bullock stated, “If people come here and know what’s going on there and don’t try to change it, then I say welcome.”

Matthew McConaughey
A native of Texas, he stayed true to his roots and continues to commute between Texas and California as he owns a mansion in Austin. Frequently spotted at University of Texas football games with his family, McConaughey has proven that giving up the Lone Star State is nearly impossible.

It only makes sense that country superstar George Strait, who recorded the song “All My Ex’s Live in Texas,” would find inspiration and solace in Texas. According to Taste of Country, the singer has owned and sold several properties in Texas, including an adobe mansion in San Antonio. Strait also owns Less Ranch, a 5,000-acre ranch in Boerne.

50 cents
By the looks of it, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson spent well over 50 cents on his Texas home in Houston. Sharing the news of his move from New York to Houston in 2021, he simply wrote on Twitter, “I love NY, I live in Houston now, I’ll explain later.” Additionally, 50 Cent solidified his place in Texas when the Houston Texans reportedly announced 50 Cent’s Branson Cognac and Le Chemin du Roi Champagne as their official cognac and champagne.

James van der Beek
Van Der Beek made headlines when he and his wife made the decision to relocate their family of eight to Austin in 2020, telling Austin Life Magazine in a profile spread, “We wanted to get the kids from Los Angeles. We wanted to give them space and we wanted them to live in nature.”

Willy Nelson
Willie Nelson embodies the spirit of Texas and it’s obvious that the Lone Star State is where he feels most at home. Nelson’s ranch, Luck Ranch, in the town of Spicewood, is used not only for Nelson family reunions, but also as a festival venue.

Kyle Chandler
Born in New York, Chandler fell in love with Texas while filming the hit show Friday Night Lights in the Lone Star State. Now living on a 33-acre ranch in Dripping Springs, Chandler and his family told Men’s Journal in 2015, “It’s cool. You make a fire on the property and just sit out there and the dogs stay with you. It is a good feeling.”

Joe Rogan
Joe Rogan loves this Texas life. The UFC commentator and JRE podcast host left his home in Los Angeles for Austin, where he currently resides in an eight-bedroom, ten-bathroom home valued at around $14.4 million. Rogan explained on his podcast, “I just want to go somewhere in the middle of the country, somewhere where it’s easier to travel to both places and somewhere where we have a little bit more freedom.”

Erykah Badu
The “Queen of Neo Soul” has never strayed from her hometown of Dallas. The R&B and soul singer-songwriter lives in White Rock Lake, just 15 minutes outside of Dallas, in a house she bought in 1999. The house is clearly an extension of Badu’s style and passion for craftsmanship.

The legendary boxer has a 300-acre ranch in Marshall where Foreman was born, according to his website. Foreman describes his ranch as a “sanctuary” where he keeps goats, cows, llamas, donkeys and deer, among other things.

Elon Musk
The richest man alive and now Twitter CEO has a home in Boca Chica near his SpaceX base facility. When interviewed on the Full Send podcast in August 2022, Musk revealed that he lived in a 800- to 900-square-foot house he bought in Texas for $45,000. “My friends come and stay and they can’t believe I’m staying in this house,” Musk said.

Tommy Lee Jones
In addition to being born in San Saba, just outside of San Antonio, the Oscar-winner owns a ranch in town. According to a report on Wide Open Country, Jones’ cattle ranch is over 150 years old and covers 3,000 acres. “In the summer we work with cattle and then around 7 a.m. we start playing polo,” Jones told the online outlet.
