Celebrities and politicians react to the tragic shooting at a Texas elementary school.
On Tuesday (May 24) the unthinkable happened when 18-year-old Salvador Ramos shot and killed his grandmother before driving to Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Armed with a rifle and wearing body armor, he opened fire, killing 21 people, according to CNN. This is the second deadliest school shooting in United States history.
Actor Matthew McConaughey hails from the town of Uvalde. He tweeted: “Once again we have tragically proved that we are not responsible for the rights our freedoms grant us. This is an epidemic that we can control, and whichever side of the aisle we’re on, we all know we can do better. We have to do better.”
Texas native Selena Gomez tweeted resources and a heartfelt message.
“A teacher killed her job; an invaluable but unfortunately underestimated job. If children are not safe at school, where are they safe? It’s so frustrating and I don’t know what to say anymore. Those in power need to stop speaking out and actually change the laws to prevent these shootings in the future,” she wrote.
Meanwhile, actor Chris Evans simply said, “F —— enough.”
Taylor Swift shared a clip of Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr speaking about the shooting at a news conference.
“Filled with rage and sadness and so heartbroken by the murders in Uvalde,” Swift wrote. “From Buffalo, Laguna Woods and so many others. From the way we as a nation have been conditioned to unfathomable and unbearable heartbreak. Steve’s words ring so true and hit so deep.”
LeBron James shared his thoughts and prayers with the families of those who were senselessly murdered.
“As if there were enough man!!! These are children and we keep putting them in danger at school. How seriously ‘IN SCHOOL’ where it’s supposed to be safest,” he wrote.
Ahead of the This Is Us finale, Mandy Moore posted on an Instagram Story that she had “no words” for the tragedy.
first lady dr Jill Biden, a former teacher, wrote, “Lord, enough. Small children and their teacher. Stunned. Furious. Inconsolable.”
“I was hoping when I became president that I wouldn’t have to do that again,” President Joe Biden said. “Another massacre. Uvalde, Texas. A primary school. Beautiful, innocent second, third, and fourth graders. And how many dozens of little kids who witnessed what happened – seeing their friends die as if they were on a battlefield, for God’s sake they’ll live with it for the rest of their lives.”
Former President Barack Obama tweeted, “May God bless the memory of the victims and in the words of Scripture heal the brokenhearted and bind up their wounds.”
