‘Celebrities can’t run away from responsibilities’

Celebrities shouldn’t endorse the products recklessly, they should make the decisions responsibly, said Rohit Kumar Singh, Secretary (CA) of the Union’s Department of Consumer Affairs and Food Distribution.

Singh was addressing a gathering at the 15th edition of Goa Fest 2022 in Bambolim, Goa on Thursday. He said the new advertising guidelines will be out soon.

“Celebrities should take responsibility. You just can’t run away from it,” Singh said, citing examples of tobacco product advertising.

“Don’t take the consumers mad with you. If someone does it, they face penalties. We love creativity. But that creativity shouldn’t mislead consumers,” he said.

He said the ministry would be quick to intervene in such matters if anyone found fraudulent consumers.

“We monitor misleading advertising. When someone says their toothpaste is #1 or wearing glasses (their brand) improves their vision, we ask them. We are questioning him as this is not acceptable,” Singh said.

“Don’t mislead consumers or jeopardize their interests. Manufacturing units need to make the consumer complaints system more robust,” he said.
