Celebrities can do more for breast cancer awareness – Van Calebs

Vans Calebs, a choreographer and dance teacher, has asked Ghanaian celebrities to use their influence in society to raise awareness about breast cancer.

The month of October has been dedicated around the world to raise awareness and support for awareness, early treatment and diagnosis.

Research published earlier this year by BMC Women’s Health found that breast cancer accounts for 31.8 percent of cancer incidence in Ghana.

According to Van Calebs, he was troubled by the low level of engagement, particularly from male celebrities, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“We celebrities need to do more to educate our beloved women about the need for early detection. But it looks like there’s a low level of turnout, particularly from some top musicians and actors, and that’s worrying,” he said.

Van Calebs added that more celebrities should join this campaign as a means of social responsibility and not think about how useful it should be.

“I know most celebrities are enterprising people, but I think they can use their platform to create that awareness and even invest in free screening for women who can’t afford it,” he said.

According to a recent Statista study, the number of deaths from breast cancer has been increasing since 2000, with over 2,900 deaths recorded in 2019.
