I don’t like the amount of celebrity voice acting we’ve seen lately. i love movies I see movies as both a form of art and entertainment, and as long as the filmmakers made their movie out of some form of seriousness, I really don’t think of any movie as a bad movie.
But despite this perspective, I am also very critical of the things I look at. My family and friends have told me they hate watching movies and shows with me. To quote my sister, “I’d rather just enjoy my movies than try to find things to be finicky about.”
I like to be critical of the media I watch and believe everyone should be media literate, not just for what’s happening on screen but also in production. How was the film made, what were the producers like and how was the film promoted? I have a kind of passion for films.
One thing that always comes first in a movie is the cast. Let’s be honest, people mostly go to the cinema because of the actors. The number of people who saw Dune would have halved if it weren’t for Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya starring in it. Popular actors make films successful.
That’s the problem. We see the same actors in and out. Look at anyone’s fan cast (where a fan casts a movie that hasn’t been made yet) and you’ll see that half of them are Marvel actors.
I’m not exempt from that. There are certain actors that I adore and would love to see in any role, but that makes it a lot harder for anyone who wants to be an actor, and I want to focus directly on animation voice acting.
It’s hard to get into the voice acting. Many young people fresh out of drama school struggle to find a job or even an audition. There are so many talented voice actors who didn’t get a role. This is because voice roles are now only passed to notable names.
According to onstageblog.com, it has become more difficult for new voice actors to apply since auditions switched to an online format. The article talks about how audition costs have increased, which requires a better microphone, camera, ring light, editing software, and a reader to help you with the lines.
This increase in cost has created another obstacle for those who are not well established or already successful. Celebrities will likely have the cash to get this gear.
Do you really think Chris Pratt is the best choice to play Mario in the new Mario movie? Or that Chris Evans is the perfect cast for young Buzz Lightyear in the new animated Lightyear movie that’s coming out?
My philosophy is that you can play any role, even your favorite role, and no matter how perfect you think the cast is, the director would have found an even better cast if he looked.
It gets even more frustrating when the celebrity they cast for the role isn’t even that good of a voice actor. I can’t legally say anything bad about it beyonce because i love her and she is perfect but she didn’t do well in the new live action movie The Lion King because she has no education and very little experience when it comes to voice acting.
It’s perfectly clear that the people in the dressing room didn’t give her much direction, because would they? It is beyoncewill you tell her that she was far from perfect?
Voice acting is a very created and passionate market. Every time you see these voice actors in interviews about their roles, it’s clear how much they love what they do. And for the most part they are talented. And that’s what makes it so hard for me to see that the barrier to entry is so much higher because someone decided that Chris Pratt would be the perfect Garfield.
