Have you ever heard of the term “buccal fat removal”? So before 2022? No? Well, welcome to the club – neither do I. Until I saw how famous celebrities and personalities like Bella Hadid, Madonna, Sophie Turner, Margot Robbie, Zoe Kravitz and the infamous Lea Michele performed the procedure without even announcing it.
That’s when I was introduced to that part of the body I’ve never heard of before – the buccal fat pad. So, according to plastic surgeons, the buccal fat pad is essentially a mass of fat that sits deep under our cheeks and is responsible for making our cheeks look quite swollen and prominent.
As of December 2022, almost everyone on the internet has become aware of what the buccal fat pad is and the procedure that removes it. When the buccal fat pad is taken out, it hollows out the cheeks and gives the face a more defined and “editorial” look. By editorial I mean runway model chic and those models with heavily defined cheekbones and jawline.
Given that this is now the “trend” set by celebrities (most famously the Kardashian-Jenner family) and on social media, let’s take a look back to see what other “trends” of almost all in the world have been swarmed past. Think broadly – fashion, makeup, lifestyle, plastic surgery, etc.
lip filler
The hourglass figure

Big butts and butt implants

Botox

Thick and full face makeup in 2016

skinny jeans

latex fashion

Now, these “trends” may not have gone away entirely, but some have clearly become outdated and dated. Celebrities and social media personalities are always at the forefront when it comes to setting these kinds of trends, and with the immense power and influence of social media, these things are continually being amplified and spotlighted.
However, we can all agree that not all trends are having a positive impact on social media. Thanks to ever-changing beauty standards imposed by the media and celebrities, the youth are almost always given more reason to believe that their looks aren’t enough. That there has to be some kind of change to be considered conventionally attractive.
And the thing is, not everyone can just fit into the “mold”. Some trends fit perfectly with others, but can also be the complete opposite for others.
The “trends” set by celebrities can’t really be called such given how beauty standards change over a decade or two. The things we now call trendy can even be considered “dark ages” on the internet (think of the early Tumblr days). At the latest when celebrities set another “trend”, they also do something very old-fashioned.
So should it be called a “trend” or a “fad”?
If you’re thinking of going under the knife just because you’ve seen it trending all over TikTok, or going through a complete change thanks to a famous celebrity you admire, please think twice. These changes can be permanent (and bloody expensive).
