Ben Affleck’s relationship with sobriety has been an uphill battle. The actor’s success with Good Will Hunting prompted him to clean up his role, so in 1997 he took his first step towards sobriety. At the time, he told a Fox News reporter, “I just wanted to quit. I started to regret some things I did when I was drunk.”
However, as his career progressed, Affleck experienced the effects of one drink too many. “Obviously, a relapse is embarrassing. I wish it hadn’t happened. I really wish my kids didn’t see it online,” he told the New York Times in a July 2021 interview. Affleck has been to rehab three times, and his most recent visit in 2018 seemed to stick. “It has taken me a long time to fundamentally, deeply, and unequivocally admit to myself that I am an alcoholic. The next drink will be no different.”
Ben Affleck has had setbacks, but he doesn’t let slips ruffle him. “I’ve certainly made mistakes. I’ve certainly done things that I regret,” he said. “But you have to pick yourself up, learn from it, learn more, try to move forward.”
