World chess champion # 1 Magnus Carlsen said more needs to be done to close the gender gap in the competitive scene of the sport.
Mr Carlsen, 30, a chess grandmaster, said more women than men got out of the game because of patriarchy.
Chess has one of the largest gender gaps in the world, with only 37 women holding a grandmaster title in 2019 compared to the 1,643 men.
Mr. Carlsen spoke to The National prior to attending the FIDE World Chess Championship, hosted by Expo 2020 Dubai from November 24th to December 16th.
“What I know from traveling around the world is that girls and boys have the same enthusiasm for the game of chess from a young age,” he said.
“Well, I think the gender difference comes up later and I think chess has to work a lot because more women than men drop out.
“More work has to be done because a lot of talented players are being lost.”
Mr Carlsen, who became a grandmaster in 2014 at the age of 13, said boys and girls are often at the same level up to a certain age, but then only men are motivated to keep watching the game.
“Women become discouraged or quit while the boys become more motivated. That leads in part to the huge gender differences, ”he said.
Carlsen said the game was useful for developing skills such as analytical thinking and that schools should encourage it in children.
“I think chess is very useful for children to play because the game teaches them strategy, analytical thinking and decision-making,” he said.
“I very much hope that children in this country can be inspired to play chess from the World Cup that will be held here.”
But he insisted that “there is no magical advice” that would help someone become a grandmaster.
When asked about his training schedule, he said he had thought about the game “all the time” and played hundreds of games every day.
“I spend a lot of time doing it, but I’m not someone who sits down in the morning and thinks I’ll devote so much time to this particular subject and so on,” he said.
“I am someone who is very passionate about chess and I love it. So I spend time doing it because I want to, not necessarily to practice. “
