Villar’s retail empire expands and plans new IPO – Manila Bulletin

Billionaire Mannuel B. Villar is optimistic about the prospects of his growing retail empire and plans to aggressively open more stores next year as he prepares for the popular Coffee Project to go public.

In an interview following the Villar Group Convention: Retail Innovation Shopping Expo (ViCon: RISE), Villar said the retail business will be buoyed by the country’s economic recovery in 2022.

“I am very h -py that (the COVID pandemic) is about to end,” said Villar, adding that higher spending will also boost the economy in 2022 as it is an election year.

He indicated that AllHome Corporation and the newly listed AllDay Marts Inc. are each planning to open 10 stores over the next year as part of their ongoing expansion program.

Villar noted that pedestrian traffic in its retail stores, all of which are held under AllValue Holdings Corporation, has recovered to pre-pandemic levels from the fourth quarter of 2021.

He added that even in their shopping malls under Vista Land and Lifesc -es Inc., pedestrian traffic has recovered to over 100 percent of pre-pandemic levels and they no longer have to make concessions to tenants as their businesses have recovered as well.

Villar said they are preparing for a “small” IPO for Coffee Project, which will have at least 100 branches by then.

He said they are also considering Coffee Project adopting their growing number of more upscale cafe-restaurant concepts that have sprung up amid the premiumization of the marketplace.

“We have eight types of these coffeeshops that are world-class and even better than the ones in Europe,” said Villar, adding that they may be putting these under the Coffee Project to increase their size for the IPO.

Villar said they are also converting their AllDay convenience stores, which are not part of the AllDay Marts supermarket chain, into AllGreen stores to offer not only groceries but also health, beauty and pharmaceutical products.

He said these were patterned after Walgreens from the United States.
