Sunderland 1-3 Lincoln City – ` Sports

Chris Maguire wasted no time telling Lee Johnson what he thought of him after he was released by the Sunderland boss last summer

Chris Maguire made a memorable return to the Stadium of Light when Lincoln’s hat-trick beat 10-man Sunderland 3-1.

Maguire was sacked by Sunderland manager Lee Johnson last summer and the Scottish striker celebrated the first of his three goals in front of his former boss who was later sent to the stands for his involvement in a field sideline.

Maguire would have sent even after just 10 minutes on the pitch when he was cautioned for a lunge at Carl Winchester, but he took advantage of his legacy when he scored the goal after 31 minutes.

Hakeeb Adelakun’s shot was blocked by Tom Flanagan, but the ball bounced back on Maguire, who shot a half volley past Anthony Patterson’s right hand before heading for the dugouts to mock Johnson.

Maguire scored a second goal in the 57th minute and drove home from the penalty spot after Winchester bundled him in the penalty area. As the last defender, Winchester received a direct red card for a professional foul.

Though there were only 10 men remaining, Sunderland gave themselves a lifeline when Ross Stewart stabbed the rebound in the 68th minute after his penalty was saved by Josh Griffiths.

The last word, however, was Maguire’s as he completed his hat-trick 15 minutes from time. The striker raced for a long ball in the right penalty area and threw a brilliant chip over the onrushing Patterson.

Sunderland’s head coach Johnson ended the game in the stands after receiving a red card after a hand-to-hand battle with several players on the sidelines.
