Ocean Springs Elk’s Mardi Gras Parade boosts the coast’s economy

OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WLOX) — The Moose of Ocean Springs held their Mardi Gras parade Saturday for the first time since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than 65 units were involved in the celebration, including 40 floats.

The annual event is one of the largest in the city and brings together people from all over the world, making it a major driver of Southern Mississippi’s economy.

Australian-born Rebecca Grinell says she’s looking forward to experiencing the community event.

“It’s very different from what we have at home. At home we have Mardi Gras Sydney and it’s a very big event but it’s very different from this one. That feels a lot cozier and a lot more community.” She said.

The parade drew thousands of people through the streets of Ocean Springs.
