Leyton Orient 5-0 Hartlepool United

Aaron Drinan has now scored seven goals for Orient this season

An unusual confusion by the referees resulted in a confusing start to the second half when Leyton Orient beat up Hartlepool and Aaron Drinan scored a hat trick for the hosts.

Four minutes into the second half, the two teams were supposed to sw – ends after referee Alan Young dropped the players too early at the end of the first half.

Orient, who took the lead on 20 minutes, did little when Harry Smith put the ball in the path of fellow striker Drinan to hit him deep into the net.

Home c -tain Darren Pratley, who had already been cautioned, then played the ball but esc -ed after 34 minutes with a referee from the umpire.

Moments later, the O’s doubled their lead when Smith got a shot in the net and Pools manager Dave Challinor was booked for his heated complaints about Pratley’s departure.

Tom James added a third early in the second half when the Pools defense went missing

Six minutes before the end, Pools keeper Jonathan Mitchell cleared the ball directly on Drinan, who shot into the empty net from 20 meters.

Drinan completed his stoppage-time hat-trick after a Smith header hit the post and got in his way for an easy t –in.

“After the game I spoke to the referee and he said he had a bad day but not as bad as my day, let me tell you,” said Hartlepool boss Dave Challinor.

“That incident with Pratley was a big turning point in the game. From that point on, things went downhill all day.

“After the referee canceled us early, your experienced manager picks up the player who should have been sent off.”

Joe Gallen, Assistant Manager of Orient added: “The referee made a mistake, he was man enough to admit it and he was trying to find a solution.

“Hartlepool wanted the extra four minutes to be repeated, which was absolutely fine with us, and we just kept going.”
