LANSING, Michigan (WJRT) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer says the latest Michigan employment numbers point to continued improvement in the state’s economy.
Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth figures released on Wednesday show the state’s unemployment rate fell to 4.8% in July, well below the national average of 5.4%. Michigan companies also created 31,000 jobs in July.
The leisure and hospitality industry saw the strongest growth in new jobs last month.
“Michigan’s job numbers are going in the right direction. Our unemployment rate is below the national average and companies are hiring quickly, ”said Whitmer.
She said the state still needs to work to bring more economic opportunities to all families, communities and small businesses. But Michigan’s share of federal COVID-19 aid money can be spent in these areas.
“Right now we have an unprecedented opportunity to use the massive federal inflow of funds we have received to make tangible and lasting investments in the kitchen table issues that affect Michigan families and small businesses most – childcare, skills development , Job creation, housing and more, “said Whitmer.
