Former Grimsby Art College student’s incredible paintings for celebrities like Mel B and Cliff Richard

A former Grimsby Art college student now paints for various celebrities and famous faces like Mel B and Cliff Richard.

Shany Hogan, 53, grew up in Elsham, near Barnetby, and attended college on Eleanor Street at the age of 16 after finishing school.

Two years ago, Shany had eye surgery to remove a congenital defect so she could see more clearly. Since then, her ability to draw and paint has improved massively.

She said, “I lived in Elsham before moving to York about 23 years ago, going to Barnetby often and taking the train to Grimsby to go to Arts College on Eleanor Street.

“The only thing that ever interested me was drawing, so I followed my passion. I think I inherited the ability to draw from my mom and grandma as they are both very skilled drawers.

“I went to college after school, but it wasn’t until I had an operation that removed a congenital eye two years ago that I started to draw better.

“Things have gotten worse since I was born, but went so far that I could barely see and my balance was badly affected.

“After the operation, I couldn’t believe how much better I was at the art.”

Since the lockdown began, Shany has published her work much more frequently, which has caught radio DJ Mike Reid’s attention.

She said, “After painting for Mike Reid, I painted a leather jacket for ex-stunt driver Eddie Kidd OBE.

“He raffled the jacket to collect money for his voicemail box because he is currently in a wheelchair after an accident in 1996.

“I then painted for Mel B, Frank Bruno, Cliff Richard and the couple from Esc -e to the Chateau.

“To me, my painting of C -tain Tom meant the most, as I did for ‘Military vs Cancer’ to raise money for charity.

“In the years I’ve been doing this, I’ve managed to raise over £ 250,000 for charity.

“I never thought I’d be as good as I am, it’s like living my dream.

“I was also asked to keep going this morning, and I’m even sponsored by Black Cab Media, who pack a black cab with all the people I painted to help me get around.

“Right now, however, it’s ridiculous, I have more celebrity friends than regular friends. During the lockdown, I painted around 400 paintings and spent 70 hours a week on them. “

Shany said she was very sad to hear that the Art College has since closed, but hopes to return to Grimsby one day to see where her career began.
