HONOLULU (KHON2) – Experts say the local economy continues to recover better than expected, but labor shortages remain a problem.

UHERO Executive Director Carl Bonham told the House of Representatives Special Committee on COVID-19 that many unemployed are still not ready to return to work.

He adds that this could improve if the July and August unemployment figures are released.

Report shows that UH contributed $ 3.6 billion to the Hawaiian economy in 2020

“I still think that we will continue to increase the demand for labor due to the strengthening,” said UHERO Managing Director Carl Bonham. “You will see wages continue to rise and encourage people to get back to work.”

With the resurgence of COVID-19 cases, the House’s Special Committee resumed regular hearings on Monday.
