Google is testing two experimental artificial intelligence (AI) systems for creators and viewers on its video streaming platform YouTube.
According to a post on YouTube Help Center, the first experiment is “AI that organizes the extensive comment sections of long videos into easy-to-understand topics.” This tool allows content creators to organize comment sections by topic, highlight specific comments, and even comment on a specific one Delete topic.
This experiment is currently active and running on a small number of English videos with very long comment sections. YouTube Premium subscribers can participate in YouTube’s Experimental Features Program.
Now the second one seems to be a bit more ambitious. It’s a generative AI chatbot seemingly similar to Google’s Bard or OpenAI’s ChatGPT, whose goal is to interact with viewers while they watch content.
According to YouTube:
“To help you dive deeper into the content you’re watching, we’re experimenting with a conversational AI tool. This tool lets you get answers to questions about the video you’re watching, recommendations for related content, and more without pausing playback.
The chatbot can also offer greater interactivity, e.g. B. Creating quizzes for users who watch specific academic videos.
This experiment is currently active for a “small number of people in a subset of videos” and will be rolled out more broadly to Premium subscribers in the US on the Android platform in the coming weeks, according to YouTube.
There’s no mention of whether a large-scale rollout of these features is planned, and YouTube seems quick to issue the usual warning that new features are experimental and “we don’t always get it right.”
Although many YouTube users welcome these tools, it is worth noting that there is little evidence of public testing when it comes to AI systems that interact with the general public and with rich video and audio content. It will be interesting to see how YouTube handles the sometimes unpredictable results of generative AI systems.
