Yield farming is expanding from finance to digital collectibles

Ethereum, the world of digital collectibles, is now ready to till fresh ground for yields.

Yield farming has made decentralized finance (DeFi) the crypto revenue juggernaut here in mid-2020, but one non-DeFi startup believes its users will also be interested in earning a new trading governance token.

Starting Wednesday, Rarible, a Dapp that allows users to create and trade non-fungible tokens (NFTs), will begin tracking all transactions on the site to reward users each week with their new governance token: RARI.

In fact, the largest share of RARI will go to Rarible users doing business, about 60% of the total supply. Trading amounts to mining for this new token.

Rarible has also reserved tokens for two key groups. First, anyone who now owns NFTs can claim some. Second, existing Rarible users who have contributed to the growth of the project will also receive an attribution.

In a world built on aesthetics, it’s better to diffuse authority, Rarible co-founder Alex Salnikov said in a call to CoinDesk. “It’s always controversial in the art world what decisions to make here,” he said.

NFTs are digital tokens designed to be absolutely unique and can only be held in one wallet at a time. That way you can create some kind of creative work and someone can really say they own it. CryptoKitties made the standard famous, although another project called CryptoPunks is usually credited with being the real pioneer. At the moment, the best-selling NFTs are digital properties, ie deeds to land in online spaces like Decentraland and Cryptovoxels, but sports cards are also seeing growth.

Moscow-based company Rarible has to make many decisions to move forward as a company. By creating a governance token, Salnikov said the site can engage its community in a substantial way. For example, the platform is free for everyone to use, so they have to decide whether or not to introduce fees for usage.

It also strives to innovate in the way people invest in NFTs, which could create another key role for RARI holders.

“We plan to study the creation of the NFT index, so if you want to bet on the NFT market in general that it will grow,” Salnikov said. So there would be an overall NFT index, but probably also indices for smaller market segments like digital real estate and art.

“Because an index needs to represent the market and the community needs to represent the market, we believe we need a community to build an index,” explained Salnikov.

Rewarding users with a fresh new token that has governance powers has worked in DeFi, but as the growth hack expands to another sector, it could mark a tipping point for crypto in general. It remains to be seen whether this turning point is the kink in the hockey stick or the peak before the downturn.

Before people can start voting their RARI tokens, they need to hold them, so here are the distribution details.

25 million RARI tokens will be created using the ERC-20 token standard. Of this, 30% will be reserved for the company’s team and ecosystem, 2% will go to existing Rarible users, and 4% will be distributed to holders of NFT sold on any platform.

However, in order for this last group to claim their RARI, they must register with Rarible. The distribution is based on how much users spend on their NFT holdings. Later there will be another distribution of 4% of the RARI offer, again to all NFT users.

So these are both airdrops, but users have to take the covers off their cisterns to catch them.

The rest of the tokens, 60% of the supply, will be distributed to everyone who buys and sells NFTs on the site over a four-year period. For 200 weeks starting this Sunday, 1/200 of the supply intended for users will be distributed to everyone based on how much they spent and earned on Rarible that week, divided proportionally.

Salnikov said the startup hopes that high gas prices on Ethereum at the moment will be enough to deter wash trading, but if not, it could convince token holders to vote to introduce some kind of fee .

Rarible will now begin tracking transactions for distribution, timed to coincide with the publication of this story.

Rarible is a marketplace for NFTs, similar to sites like OpenSea.

It is also a platform for creating NFTs (“minting” in crypto jargon). So users can go to Rarible with content they own and associate that digital content with an NFT, a cryptographic proof of ownership.

“We support single editions, multiple editions, and one of the coolest features is unlockables,” explained Salnikov.

For example: artists could sell a film or book as an NFT. You could provide some sort of preview of the content (e.g. an example or trailer) but all of the content wouldn’t be “unlocked” until the NFT actually sold (i.e. you couldn’t read the entire book or watch the movie) . unless you had the NFT).

The Raribles system supports both ERC-721, which is fully non-fungible tokens, and ERC-1155, which enables semi-fungibility, a popular idea among game publishers. Salnikov says it has many ideas on its development list and a small development team, so the governance token could be used to decide which upgrades to prioritize.

In addition, the transition to digital art raises new questions for the administration, e.g. B. How to curate the main pages of the Rarible marketplace so that the most attractive projects are in the foreground.

Furthermore, art leads to complex questions of categorization, such as what is a remix, what is an original work, what is actually piracy, etc. In other words, as this sector grows, moderation becomes increasingly onerous.

As with any creatively oriented website, moderation eventually becomes an issue. “It’s always easy to get started, but if we talk about the efficiency of this process, it won’t be that easy,” Salnikov admitted.

He hopes that with a large group of people whose interests are aligned with the success of the market, they might be able to make those decisions more successfully than Web 2.0.

But if Rarible can properly navigate its virtual orb marketplace, it has the potential to transform the new yield farming pastures from a wild tangle of weeds into an alluringly landscaped garden.
