Crypto investor and tech entrepreneur Balaji Srinivasan, former CEO of Coinbase, lost $1 million betting on US inflation.
The winner of the bet, the pseudonymous Twitter account @jdcmedlock, plans to use part of the profits to fund the construction of a cat house for neighborhood feral cats, Quartz reports.
Srinivasan had bet in March that Bitcoin would hit $1 million within 90 days due to US hyperinflation. However, as the Federal Reserve takes action to tame prices, hyperinflation remains a long way off, making @jdcmedlock the winner.
The bet drew widespread attention, with pundits including Black Swan writer Nassim Nicholas ridiculing Taleb Srinivasan’s prediction.
Mike Novogratz, founder of Galaxy Digital, expressed concern about the potential consequences if Bitcoin hits $1 million in value, as it could lead to chaos and destruction.
Despite the outcome of the bet, both Srinivasan and @jdcmedlock made good use of the winnings. Srinivasan donated an additional $500,000 to Bitcoin Core developers, while Medlock donated $500,000 to GiveDirectly, an anti-poverty charity.
After paying taxes and clearing some debts, Medlock will focus on building the cat house and investing in low fee index funds. The winner sees these index funds as a much better alternative to Bitcoin.
The bet has sparked discussions about the future of Bitcoin and the risks associated with bold predictions. Some experts stress the importance of prudent investing and the need for the crypto industry to prioritize legitimacy.
