Why the crypto industry is waiting for an iPhone-like breakthrough

The crypto industry, full of promise and innovation, is at a critical juncture. Many compare the current scenario to the technology sector just before the launch of the iPhone.

In fact, the market is full of opportunities, however, a game-changing breakthrough is missing.

Crypto UX Challenge: Bridging the gap between sophistication and seamlessness

When Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong recently highlighted the inadequacies in the user experience of his crypto exchange’s app, it reflected the larger problems facing the industry.

Armstrong drew attention to user experience issues for non-fungible tokens, decentralized apps and layer-2s, citing a common concern: the market is demanding but not seamless for the everyday user.

“One thing Onchain Summer reveals is how broken our UX is in the main Coinbase app… Sorry but true,” Armstrong said.

This sentiment aligns with the broader challenge of creating a seamless UI/UX in the crypto industry. But why is this such a big task?

An X user formerly known as Twitter under the alias 0xDesigner pointed out the underlying difference between Web2 and Web3.

Web3’s persistence, he says, means that actions on the blockchain are irreversible, which means more cognitive effort is required from users. He draws a parallel, comparing Web2 to driving an automatic car, while Web3 feels more like maneuvering a gear stick.

“In recent years, tolerance for difficult-to-use apps has been asymmetrically high as there has been a financial incentive for users to overcome them. Most products and protocols compete on incentives rather than usability,” 0xDesigner affirmed.

In fact, the underlying technology behind cryptocurrency is revolutionary, but it lacks an interface that caters to today’s digital users. 0xDesigner anticipates that the next wave of adoption will be fueled by consumer applications where crypto operates behind the scenes.

The goal should be that users do not realize they are interacting with crypto unless they delve deeper into the platforms.

“The next cycle requires an infrastructure that makes the crypto part feel invisible. And we’re basically there: Web2 logins, spinning up wallets in the background, easy in and out,” added 0xDesigner.

From Trading Platforms to Daily Use: The Crypto Evolution

Likewise, Sean Rach, co-founder of Web3 banking platform hi, argues that the crypto industry is comparable to the pre-iPhone era of technology – all just boom without the groundbreaking utility. The iPhone combined iPod, phone and Internet into one simple multi-touchscreen device.

In an exclusive interview with BeInCrypto, Rach said that the cryptocurrency market is waiting for a similar leap.

“We need such a breakthrough in crypto. Even though the hype around things like DeFi and NFTs is currently huge, for many it is still about trading and not about everyday utility for everyone. It is clear to me that true success lies in creating real value for the average non-technical person,” affirmed Rach.

Integrating cryptocurrencies, DeFi and NFTs seamlessly into the lives of everyday users is indeed the challenge.

Rach stressed that the core issue with crypto’s UI/UX isn’t necessarily teaching users the intricacies of the technology in depth. Instead, it’s about improving it in such a way that it naturally adapts to user expectations and eliminates the need for in-depth “training”.

“Mass audiences shouldn’t be expected to engage with terms like ‘gas fees’, ‘DeFi’, ‘stake’ or ‘yield farming’ without clear, intuitive guidance. We are confident that with intuitive design, easy-to-understand educational resources, and an efficient bridge between traditional and digital finance, crypto can be demystified and widely adopted,” added Rach.

Still, the obstacles are obvious. Complexity, trust and integration are the three main hurdles. The solution is to combine intuitive design with security, transparency and seamless integration with users’ digital behaviors.

“In my view, the ‘dream’ user experience is one where the benefits of Web3 are obvious yet invisible. “It’s a world where interacting with decentralized systems feels no different than any other digital interaction and where secure, private financial transactions are possible with a few clicks,” Rach said.

The future, as imagined by industry experts, paints a hopeful picture. In the next five years, UI/UX for Web3 platforms will evolve and become more integrated and user-friendly. Blockchain interactions today could be as intuitive as sending an email.

In this context, design will be of central importance in order to make learning fun and to present complex information in an understandable way. Its essence lies in its simplicity, intuitiveness and seamless integration into users’ everyday lives.

Only then will the transformative power of crypto truly unfold and usher in a new digital age.
