What is bitcoin hashrate and why is it important?

Cryptocurrencies have attracted the interest of several investors over the past few years, and many new investors are now exploring opportunities in the sector. According to CoinMarketCap, there are over 21,000 cryptos and 520+ crypto exchanges at the time of writing.

However, crypto and blockchain technology both became popular with the launch of Bitcoin (BTC) in 2009, and the rest is history. Hash rate can be described as the amount of computing power, or processing, contributed to a network to process transactions.

Bitcoin hash rate is nothing else, it refers to how much computing or processing power is used by the network for mining. BTC mining is a critical process that helps sustain the crypto network.

BTC mining requires advanced computers that can solve complex mathematical problems that verify BTC transactions. In order to solve mathematical calculations, each of the advanced computers or machines has to perform a large number of guesses per second, which costs a significant amount of electricity.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin is created through the use of blockchain technology. The blocks can be described as the files that store data about the transactions, and these blocks form a chain with each block connected to another.

A block is created for each transaction that is publicly viewable without manipulation. Similar to data files, the smaller blocks require less power while the larger blocks require a lot of power to verify, and this is where hashing comes in.

Hashing a block means validating the integrity of the network transaction, and miners receive BTC as a reward for hashing. By calculating the hash rate, miners were able to predict its profitability. But every mining machine or computer is different from the others in terms of processing speed, memory, etc., and therefore the rate varies as well.

Each crypto’s hash rate helps traders understand the strength and security of their network. In other words, it helps investors gauge how efficient Bitcoin’s Proof-of-Work (PoW) network is against hackers.

Higher hash rate means better network stability and security as it would require more energy, miners and time to be in control of the network and vice versa.

According to blockchain.com, the estimated total hash rate of bitcoin at the time of writing is 266.583 million terahashes per second (TH/s). As mentioned earlier, the higher hash rate means miners spend more on the mining process using advanced equipment.
