According to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, the emergence of Bitcoin (BTC) ordinals signals the “organic return of builder culture” to the network.
Buterin made these comments on Twitter on July 7, where he spoke at length with Bitcoin proponents Eric Wall and Udi Wertheimer about what Bitcoin developers could learn from Ethereum developers.
Buterin praised ordinals and the BRC-20 token standard, which he sees as a rejection of the “stagnant” politics in the Bitcoin ecosystem.
“Ordinal numbers are beginning to bring back a culture of actual action. It feels like there’s real resistance to the laser eye movement, and that’s good,” Buterin said.
The focus of the nearly two-hour discussion was the topic of scalability. Wall claimed that Bitcoin’s Lightning Network is not scalable for future users and “frequently” fails when processing “even medium-sized payments.”
In response, Buterin suggested that the best approach is to focus on implementing different types of Layer 2 solutions while looking for ways to make the Bitcoin base layer more efficient.
“I think it’s good to focus on rollups, as well as being open to ZK-Snark-based scaling solutions.”
Wertheimer thought the introduction of rollups could have an interesting side effect.
“In fact, when we introduce rollups for bitcoin, we also get an execution environment […] We can enter into smart contracts,” said Wertheimer.
Wall and Wertheimer — two key figures behind the Ordinals project Taproot Wizards — are outspoken proponents of Ordinals and regularly advocate for building expanded functionality on the Bitcoin network.

Her stance has drawn criticism from more fundamentalist bitcoiners, who claim that NFTs and smart contracts on top of bitcoin dilute its supposed primary function as a peer-to-peer cash network.
Among those critics is Samson Mow, CEO of Jan3, who believes ordinals waste block space that could otherwise be reserved for bitcoin payments.
Wall took note of these criticisms, stating that bitcoin could be used as an “evidence system” for zero-knowledge proof that would not overload the network.
“My perspective is that we [Bitcoiners] We’ve always wanted to do DeFi-related things, but we just wanted the Bitcoin base layer to just act as a kind of judge or arbiter of that calculation and not have to do the calculation on-chain,” Wall said.
“We shouldn’t necessarily just think about second layer as a payment option, but I think we could think about that as well [as a way of doing] expressive things.”
The discussion sparked new controversy in the Bitcoin community, with Wertheimer criticizing Mow and Blockstream CEO Adam Beck for declining to speak to Buterin.
